When I worked for the Army Corps of Engineers during the summer while I was in college, I had to sign a document stating that I had not been a member of certain Communist Front organizations. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was listed and the name struck me as ironic. It fought on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and was one or several Republican forces financed at least in part by Stalin and the Soviet Union.
