Saint John of Capistrano is called the soldier saint. This painting shows him following the victory at the Battle of Belgrade in July 1456. His foot rests on the severed heads of Ottoman soldiers. He was an Italian Franciscan friar. He is the patron saint of Hungary. The Ottoman commander Mehmed II besieged the castle of Belgrade in order to invade Christian Europe. John was known as the Scourge of the Jews for inciting antisemitic violence.
