According to our guide, this scene on the facade of St. Mark's depicts the smuggling of relics of St. Mark from Egypt. In order to sneak the relics past the Muslim inspectors, this shows them repelled by the contents of the basket, which the Venetians told the inspectors contained pork, and thus misled they did not find the contraband hidden beneath in the basket.
