By legend, Siena was founded by the two sons of Remus who fled Rome after their father was killed by Romulus. The sons, Senius and Aschius, took the statue of the suckling wolf, appropriating the symbol for the city. They rode black and white horses, giving rise the city shield of black and white and creating the basis for the colors of stone stripes in the Duomo. Wikipedia: Siena - History
