The original work on this subject was of classical origin and unearthed during excavation for Santa Maria della Vittoria in Roma. Borghese appropriated the piece when he heard of it and in compensation paid for continued construction of the church. When Napoleon occupied Roma 200 years later he married his sister to a Borghese and had the classical sculpture sent to Paris. This is an early 19th century work on the same subject.
